Posting Social Media Status Updates – A thieves backdoor

social-network-cyber-criminalMost of my readers on this blog and my other blogs and websites will probably have registered for an account with such sites as Facebook, Twitter and even Foursquare. But did you know that the thieves are using this against you?

Have you ever added your location to some of your tweets, your posts and updates? Have you ever added holiday photos while you were away? Well, its become a ‘well known fact’ that thieves are now using such social networking sites to target their next victim.

Now just to be correct here there is not any data to support this but from many conversations I have had in many forums I know this is happening. Regardless of your home being locked (and having an alarm, window locks, deadlocks, deadbolts etc), the thieves will know you (and possibly your family) are not home, so this will allow them more time to perform their robbery and steal more of your valuables right under your nose.

Believe it or not most burglaries happen in broad daylight while people are walking the streets, and you are at work or out visiting family, out doing your Christmas shopping maybe. Obviously if you are updating your location statuses burglars will collect all the necessary information needed to commit the ‘break and enter’ – and wait for the parents to be out too if required. Burglars are opportunistic but there are many who now carefully plan their intended targets. ‘It’s all in the planning’ they say.

So think twice about updating your social status giving away vital information that could easily be used against you. So you have officially been warned!
